Someone in a Facebook group told you sublimation is cheaper. Someone else told you it is softer, and they are both right, and neither of them asked what you are printing on.
DTF and sublimation are not really competitors. They are two processes with almost no overlap, and the thing that decides between them is not price or quality — it is the shirt. Get the fabric question right and the choice makes itself.
The one rule that settles most of it
Sublimation needs white or light-colored polyester. DTF does not care.
That is genuinely most of the decision. If you are printing cotton tees, blends, or anything dark, sublimation is not an option — not a worse option, not an option. If you are printing white 100% polyester performance wear or hard goods, sublimation is excellent and often the better pick.
Everything below is the reasoning behind that rule.
How each one works
Sublimation
Sublimation ink turns from solid to gas under heat and bonds into polyester fibers. The dye becomes part of the fabric. There is no layer sitting on top, which is why a sublimated shirt feels like it has nothing printed on it at all.
Two consequences fall straight out of that. First, the dye needs polyester to bond with — on cotton it has nothing to grab and washes out. Second, sublimation ink is transparent and there is no white. On a black shirt, your artwork simply disappears into the fabric.
DTF
DTF prints your artwork onto a film, lays down a white ink underbase behind it, and bonds the whole thing to the garment with adhesive powder and heat. Because there is a white layer, colors stay true on any shirt color. Because it bonds with adhesive rather than dye chemistry, fiber content stops mattering.
The trade is a very slight hand feel. There is a layer there. It is thin and it softens after a wash, but a sublimated poly shirt will always feel like nothing and a DTF print will always feel like something.

When sublimation genuinely wins
- White polyester performance wear. Jerseys, running shirts, cycling kit. No hand feel, no cracking, and the print outlives the garment.
- All-over prints. Sublimation can run edge to edge and seam to seam in a way transfers cannot.
- Mugs and coated hard goods. If the substrate has a polyester coating, sublimation is the standard for a reason.
- Anything that has to feel like nothing. Baby clothes, athletic wear, high-end poly.
When DTF wins
- Cotton anything. This is most of the apparel market, and sublimation is simply out.
- Dark and black shirts. The white underbase is the whole ballgame.
- Mixed orders. One sheet can print for cotton tees, poly hoodies, and canvas totes in the same run.
- Small batches and one-offs. No setup, no screens, no minimums beyond the sheet itself.
- Not knowing what is coming next. If a customer walks in with a blend you have never printed, DTF already handles it.
What about tumblers and hard surfaces?
This is the one place people assume they have to own a sublimation setup, and they do not. UV DTF wraps are peel-and-stick — no heat press, no polyester coating required. They go onto glass, metal, powder-coated steel, acrylic, and finished wood, none of which sublimation will touch without a special coating.
If tumblers were your reason for considering sublimation, that reason may not hold.
Do you need both?
Some shops run both, and there is a clean logic to it: sublimation for white poly and hard goods, DTF for everything else. But it is two ink systems, two printers, two sets of consumables, and two learning curves.
Most shops we work with start with DTF for one unglamorous reason — it covers more of what walks in the door. Cotton and dark garments are the bulk of the apparel market, and that is exactly the half sublimation cannot serve. You can add sublimation later, once you know that white polyester is genuinely a big enough slice of your orders to justify a second setup.
Getting DTF right
If you land on DTF, the settings that matter:
- 303°F for most fabrics, 280°F for 100% polyester — poly scorches and dye-migrates if you run it hot
- Pre-press 6 seconds, lint-roll first
- Press 6 seconds, heavy pressure
- Peel warm, not hot, then press again 6 seconds under a cover sheet
- Wash after 24 hours
That 280°F note is worth underlining. Polyester is the fabric sublimation people are most comfortable with, and it is also the one most likely to burn under DTF settings meant for cotton. Turn the press down.
The short version
Check the tag. If it says cotton or blend, or the shirt is dark, you are printing DTF. If it says 100% polyester and the garment is white or light, sublimation is worth owning. Almost everything else is a preference argument that the fabric already settled for you.
